Thoracentesis and paracentesis are two medical procedures used to diagnose and treat fluid accumulation within the body. Thoracentesis is a procedure to remove fluid in the pleural space which is between the two layers of the pleura. Paracentesis is a procedure to remove excess fluid from the peritoneal space which is located between the membrane lining the abdomen and abdominal organs. Both procedures involve the insertion of a needle into the fluid-filled space followed by draining of the fluid.

Location of Procedure
Thoracentesis is performed at the pleura which is the membrane lining the chest cavity and lungs. Paracentesis is performed at the membrane lining the abdomen and abdominal organs.
Instruments Used
Thoracentesis uses a needle. Paracentesis may use either a needle or a trocar depending upon the patient’s condition and the reason for the procedure.
Fluids Removed
Thoracentesis removes pleural effusion, which is the accumulation of fluid between the pleural layers. Paracentesis removes ascites or intra abdominal fluid.
Procedure Time
Thoracentesis typically requires a shorter procedure time as compared to paracentesis.
