Sadaqah
Sadaqah (also known as charity) is voluntary, non-obligatory charity performed by Muslims to assist those in need.The term sadaqah is derived from the Arabic root sa-da-qa (صَدَقَ), which means sincerity or truth. Sadaqah is Islamically meant to show selflessness, generosity, and love for another person in need. The primary purpose of sadaqah is to assist one’s fellow human being and attain spiritual benefits for oneself.
Zakat
Zakat is the third pillar of Islam and an obligatory almsgiving for all Muslims. It is money given to certain categories of people that is taken from those who have extra assets. Zakat is different from Sadaqah in that it is obligatory, rather than voluntary and is paid from assets that Muslims have kept aside for themselves.
Zakat is obligatory upon all Muslims to be calculated on jobs, businesses, and assets, and given to relatives, the poor and the needy, debtors, travelers, and those working in the way of Allah (SWT).
Differences between Sadaqah and Zakat
The main difference between Sadaqah and Zakat is that Sadaqah is voluntary, while Zakat is obligatory. Sadaqah is an act of charity and kindness, while Zakat is a religious obligation and part of the Five Pillars of Islam.
